I've always seen a good side to that sort of - well, understanding - and a negative side.
On the plus side, there's the recognition of the limits on our understanding and the sheer wonder of existence and our being here at all. To rely on our own understanding in the sense of denying this and imagining that we have anything close to all the answers - the way, for example, some seem to almost worship science - I think is unrealistic.
On the minus side, I've often heard this kind of thing used as a heavy handed tactic to squelch discourse in the area of religion. It can be a way of saying "Well, my interpretation of scripture and view of God is the true one, whether you get it or not!"

OMG I would love it, but then again, I'm a big dork myself.
"Not depending on our understanding..."
